Dynamic, interactive small and large group workshops for grades preK-9 led by an experienced educator.

I’d love to visit your school!

Whole School presentation, 45 min

This interactive presentation includes a read aloud, the making of Night Song and There’s That Sun Again from brainstorm to book, and my path to becoming an author, followed by a Q&A, and activities tailored to meet the needs of your particular grade span and group.

Making Our Own Song, PreK-3, 30-45 min

After a read aloud and Q&A, the youngest learners will take on the roles of birds, crickets, frogs, and more as we sing our own night song. Older students will co-create illustrations of both a night song and a morning song that reflect their local environment.

Hill and Valley Moments, K-6, 45-90 min

Using There’s That Sun Again as a mentor text, we’ll explore our own “hill and valley” experiences (ups, downs, and ups again) through personal narrative art making, writing, and performance.

Writers Workshop, grades 4-9, 45-90 min

Students will experience a mock publication process. Authors and illustrators will team up to make the start of a picture book or a short comic as we explore the challenges and opportunities of collaboratively creating illustrated narratives.

NEW!

School-Based Writer in Residence, grades preK-9, 6 full day visits

A special opportunity to more deeply investigate and develop visual narratives through project-based learning. Workshops include both creative writing and visual storytelling studio to make projects like picture books, chapbooks, reader’s theater scripts and performances, character sculptures, and more.

I work closely with schools to design residencies that meet their students’ needs and interests. Residencies can include a combination of traditional author visit style presentations as well as workshops so that all grades in the school community have the opportunity to meet and work with an author.

What librarians are saying…

Mk visited our 1st and 2nd graders as part of Nevada Reading Week. As they walked into the library and saw Mk smiling on the screen, there were squeals of delight and anticipation. Mk was thoroughly engaging with a delightful read aloud and interactive game. Our 30 minute virtual author visit stretched to 40 and could easily have lasted longer. The students had so many questions!

Deborah Apel, Librarian, Roger Corbett Elementary

Mk’s visit to our school library was enjoyed by all of our students, from preschoolers all the way up to 6th graders. Mk was very responsive to our needs and planned age-appropriate, high interest activities for every age group, being flexible all the while to satisfy the students’ in-the-moment interests and questions.

Donna Rivers, Librarian, Leverett Elementary School

My students loved Night Song, and were excited to meet Mk. Their visit was carefully tailored to the different age groups, and included an activity, which kept the interest high. Down to earth, and easy to work with, it was a fun day for all. We look forward to welcoming them back in the future!

Marcia Bernard, Librarian, The Bement School

What kids and families are saying…

I liked how they inspired me to write stories.

We got to write and have a friend illustrate our writing.  My friend had a drawing that I loved and was better than I expected.

Our whole family read Night Song that night and loved it.
